Description
The second of four 2012 French & Indian War Seminars at the Conococheague Institute centers on the theme of a fascinating diary kept by James McCullogh not far from the site of the Conococheague Institute in the mid-18th century. Speakers include Dr. Paula Reed, Dr. John Stauffer, Calvin Bricker, Cynthia Lawrence-Fink, and Roger Swartz. Participants are invited to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the grounds after the symposium. The old garden rose varieties on the grounds will be in bloom.
Pre-Registration is required due to limited seating.

Schedule:
9:30 a.m.– history of the diary and plans for its preservation by Paula Reed
9:45 a.m.– James McCullogh’s immigration to America and to Upton by John Stauffer
10:15 a.m.– an overview of the contents of the diary with description of agricultural practices by Calvin Bricker
10:45 – Break
11:00 – Cindy Fink – making linen with samples of various linen types described in the diary
11:30 – frontier Indian attacks and captives by John Stauffer
11:45 – Roger Swartz on what we learn from this diary
12:15 – Roger Swartz – discussion and summary
**Note: there will be summary materials passed out, including a time line of the diary, a list of Indian attacks, notes on farming practices, a list of linen types and perhaps others.
