Description
Allison-Antrim Museum, 365 South Ridge Avenue, Greencastle, Pennsylvania 17225 will hold its monthly speaker meeting on Thursday, June 8, 2023, in the German Bank Barn beginning at 7 p.m. The facility is wheelchair accessible.
The speaker for the evening will be Bonnie A. Shockey, president of Allison-Antrim Museum. 2023 is the 160th anniversary of the Gettysburg Battle. Shockey will present a PowerPoint program entitled “Defying General Pickett – Dolly Harris Greencastle’s Flag-Waving Girl.” Frances Dolly Harris Lesher is the only known Pennsylvania woman buried with full military honors upon her death. When the Confederates began their invasion into Pennsylvania, Greencastle was the first town through which the Confederates passed. Under her own volition, 17-yearold Dolly took a United States flag, wrapped it around her waist, went outside to the front of her home at 37 North Carlisle Street and defied the actions of the General Pickett and his Confederate foot soldiers. Dolly “roundly denounced the troopers as traitors to their country, cut throats, and plunderers.”
