The CVSM (Cumberland Valley School of Music) Community String Orchestra will be presenting a concert on Tuesday, November 18, at 7:00 PM at Thomson Alumnae Chapel, Wilson College, Chambersburg. Admission to the concert is free, although donations to the Cumberland Valley School of Music, a nonprofit community school of the arts, will be gratefully accepted.
The orchestra includes musicians of all ages and from all walks of life who enjoy playing challenging orchestral music. Under the guidance of conductor Deborah Stotelmyer, the diverse program will include arrangements of works by Rossini, Bach, Copland and more. Some fun pieces will include 2 versions of “Cakewalks, ” William Tell Overture, and The Muppet Theme Song. Featured violinists Cindy Scanzello and Christine Gramp will also add their talents to the performance.
Community Orchestra Director, Deb Stotelmyer, has over 30 years’ experience professionally performing, including 22 years in the Maryland Symphony Orchestra as Associate Principal and Acting Principal 2nd Violin, and as Concertmaster of The Millbrook Orchestra, and The Frederick Symphony. She continues to serve as Concertmaster for the Mercersburg Area Community Chorus’ Orchestra, and performs with Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra in Shepherdstown, WV. She has many years' experience teaching and coaching students, and has had many students achieve honors, such as being chosen by audition for a month- long orchestra program for young artists, paid for by The National Symphony in Washington DC, being chosen for Maryland All-State Orchestra, Pennsylvania District 7, Regional, and All-State Orchestras, and West Virginia All-State. Currently, she still teaches private students part-time at Mercersburg Academy and for Cumberland Valley School of Music in Chambersburg, while working in her capacity as a financial advisor rep, listed on FINRA.
Cindy Scanzello, 1st violin soloist and concertmaster, is a native of Chambersburg, Cindy has taught for CVSM since 2008. She retired from the Chambersburg Area School District in 2021 after teaching string lessons and directing orchestras for 34 years. Cindy performed with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, the Cumberland Valley Chamber Players, the Shippensburg Festival Orchestra and Totem Pole Playhouse. She currently performs with the Mercersburg Community Chorus orchestra, the Shippensburg University/Community Orchestra, various pit orchestras and freelance musicians for weddings and other special occasions.
Christine Gramp, 1st violin soloist, is a seasoned violinist with a BS of Fine Arts in Music from Towson University, where she studied under Dr. Zoltan Szabo. Her foundational training began at age 10 in the Ann Arbor public school system, utilizing the Suzuki method. Following graduation, she established and managed a successful strings program for the Baltimore City School System. Her performance background includes tenure with the York Symphony Orchestra and engagements with the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra in New Hampshire. During this time, she received a distinct honor: an invitation to perform with Tim Janis at Carnegie Hall. After a period dedicated to her family and homeschooling, Christine has returned to performance, currently serving as a paid orchestral ringer for the Shippensburg University Orchestra and playing with the CVSM Orchestra.
The Cumberland Valley School of Music is a non-profit member of the National Guild of Community Arts Education, with more than 600 students and 55 faculty members at locations in Chambersburg, Greencastle, Shippensburg, and Waynesboro. The school offers individual instruction on all orchestral and band instruments as well as voice, piano, and guitar and offers a wide variety of classes, workshops, summer camps, and ensembles for students of all ages and abilities, from toddlers to adults.
