Assistant Controller

The Assistant Controller is a financial professional that is responsible for providing high-level support to the Controller as they manage the company's accounting and financial activities. They use their industry knowledge, skills, and technical abilities to effectively support executive management in monitoring and improving the company's finances. They work with the Controller to create and implement accounting systems and internal controls that meet industry guidelines and follow established accounting regulations - GAAP. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Reconcile accounts and assist with month-end and year-end tie down and closing activities. 
  • Preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports. 
  • Identify solutions to discrepancies in financial records. 
  • Supporting the accounting department in all aspects of the general ledger.
  • Assist with forecasting and budgeting.
  • Perform internal audits and help to formulate and implement internal control measures and policies to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure that all accounting practices and reporting are compliant with legal guidelines and established accounting principles and monitor for updates and changes in guidelines and principles.
  • Prepare and manage accounts using various software programs and accounting software programs. 
  • Prepare and assist with audits.
  • Inventory controls and reporting.
  • Payroll tax returns. Provide payroll backup and support.
  • Equipment and depreciation controls.
  • Sales tax returns.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Professional certification such as a CPA or CMA designation is a plus.
  • 3 - 5 years' experience as an assistant controller, accountant, or a similar role.
  • Prior experience working in the construction and/or excavating and knowledge of relevant industry regulations is a plus.
  • Understanding of GAAP and relevant financial accounting regulations and best practices.
  • Strong computer skills and working knowledge of accounting software programs.
  • Able to process large amounts of data and identify patterns based upon analysis.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Excellent understanding of governmental guidelines and tax laws that affect the company operation.
  • Proficient with data analysis, critical thinking and problem solving.
  • Able to work independently and collaborate by using teamwork skills.
  • Skilled in time management and able to prioritize tasks.
  • Prior experience with certified payroll is a plus.
  • A comprehensive understanding of payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and billing.
  • Expected to work with the highest level of integrity.
