February is Black History Month, and we welcome Dr. Emilie Amt as speaker. What was the Civil War like for the thousands of African Americans, free and enslaved, who lived in southern Pennsylvania and northern Maryland? This talk will explore their experiences as civilians, the challenges, and dangers they faced, and how life changed for them during the war. Copies of Dr. Amt's book will be available for sale and signing after the talk.
Dr. Emilie Amt is an award-winning writer of African American history in western Maryland and an emeritus professor of history at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland.
